 More importantly, the RR completion was the first time since before the war, the country could unite over a thing, as United Americans, regardless of race of origin. We needed it. For four long years of war, followed by four long years of war enmity, spite, and suspicion, one group of Americans to another, came to a final and absolute end. 

It's easy to criticize, looking back with modern eyes, the ways and means of the doings. But in the end, the entire affair was cathartic healing bond that began a new chapter in the American Experience.
