Watch out Santa Barbara waiters; a new city ordinance prohibiting restaurant employees from giving customers plastic straws has a penalty of $1,000 or up to six months in jail, reports National Review. Taking it one step further, the ever-disgusting, drink ruining "compostable straws" are banned too.
Give someone a straw, go to jail. Of all the important issues facing SB, this is what they pick on as being important? Only the insane follows this carbon footprint global warming scam.
The bill was passed unanimously last Tuesday, and covers bars,
restaurants, and other food-service businesses. Establishments will
still be allowed to hand out plastic stirrers, but only if customers

The city's new ordinance may be "the most severe straw ban in the country," according to Reason, but it's hardly the first. Two weeks ago, Seattle banned plastic straws - leading Starbucks to introduce "adult sippy cups" which actually use more plastic.

Santa Barbara, however, has gone much further than Seattle — even aside from the harsher punishments its law imposes. Santa Barbara has banned not only plastic straws, but also compostable straws.
Oh, and each individual straw counts as a separate infraction, meaning
that if someone got busted handing out straws to a table of four people,
he or she could end up facing years behind bars. -National Review

The California cities of San Luis Obispo and Davis both passed
straws-on-request laws last year, and Manhattan Beach maintains a
prohibition on all disposable plastics. And up in Seattle, food service
businesses won't be allowed to offer plastic straws or utensils as of July. The Los Angeles Times has gotten behind the movement,endorsing straws-on-request policies in an editorial that also warned that "repetitive sucking may cause or exacerbate wrinkles on the lips or around the mouth." Celebrity astronomer Neil The Asshole Tyson (always up for a little chiding) and Entourage wanker star Adrian Grenier have appeared in videos where an octopus slaps them in the face for using a plastic straw. That's how F'd up this country has become.
The actual number of straws being used is unclear. Calderon, along with news outlets writing about this issue—from CNN to the San FranciscoChronicle—unfailingly
state that Americans use 500 million plastic straws a day, many of them
ending up in waterways and oceans. The 500 million figure is often
attributed to the National Park Service; it in turn got it from the recycling company Eco-Cycle.
Eco-Cycle is unable to provide any data to back up this number, telling Reason that it was relying on the research of one Milo Cress. Cress—whose

that he arrived at the 500 million straws a day figure from phone
surveys he conducted of straw manufacturers in 2011, when he was just 9 years old.
Cress, who is now 16, says that the National Restaurant Association

true, but the only references to the 500 million figure on the
association's website again points back to the work done by Cress. More important than how many straws Americans use each day is how many wind up in waterways. We don't know that figure either. The closest we have is the number of straws collected by the California Costal Commission during its annual Coastal Cleanup Day: a total of 835,425 straws and stirrers since 1988, or about 4.1 percent of debris collected.

Following
the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan - which
left Japanese residents contending with toxic water and radioactive wild boars, World
Health Organization (WHO) officials said that particles of radioactive
fallout which made its way to the Western United States and elsewhere
was no biggie and didn't pose a health risk.
California wine lovers will get to test that theory, after
researchers at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS)
discovered cesium-137 in several golden-state vintages. The
researchers tested 18 bottles of California rose and Cabernet sauvignon
from 2009 onward - finding increased levels of the radioactive isotope
in bottles produced after the Fukushima disaster. The Cabernet had
double the radiation of the other wine, according to the study.
"We can measure some radioactive level that is much higher than the
usual level," said Michael Pravikoff, a physicist at a French research
center who worked on the study.
The French research team has in recent years examined wines from
around the world, trying to correlate the level of radioactive material
with the date the wine grapes were picked.
Wines made around major nuclear events, including American and Soviet
nuclear tests during the Cold War and the Chernobyl accident, should
show higher levels of radioactive isotopes, called cesium-137, according
to the researchers. The man-made isotope cannot be found in nature and would be present only at certain levels after the nuclear events. -NYT
While ingesting cesium-137 elevates one's risk of cancer, the radioactive particles found in California wine "are not seen as a health hazard" according to Pravikoff, who said: "These levels are so low, way below the natural radioactivity that’s everywhere in the world."
The California Department of Public Health said Friday that it had
not previously heard of the study, but that there were no “health and
safety concerns to California residents.”
“This report does not change that,” a department spokesman, Corey Egel, said in an emailed statement.
Mr. Pravikoff said the California bottles had radioactive levels so
low that the researchers had to use a special technique to measure them:
burning the wine to ashes.
In other cases, where radiation is higher, the team’s equipment can
measure the radiation through the glass of the wine bottle, so the
bottle does not have to be opened. -NYT

that "Radiation from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster detected on
Oregon shores," however officials claimed that the samples from
Tillamook Bay and Gold Beach were "at extremely low levels not harmful
to humans."
That said, as Whitney Webb of TrueActivist

parts of North America’s western coast have been feeling the effects for
years.Not long after Fukushima, fish in Canada began bleeding from their gills, mouths, and eyeballs.
This “disease” has been ignored by the government and has decimated
native fish populations, including the North Pacific herring. Elsewhere
in Western Canada, independent scientists have measured a 300% increase in the level of radiation. According to them, the amount of radiation in the Pacific Ocean is increasing every year. Why is this being ignored by the mainstream media? It might have something to do with the fact that the US and Canadian governments have banned their citizens from talking about Fukushima so “people don’t panic.”
Also in 2016, Japanese officials admitted there was a cover-up, and there was a concerted effort to downplay the significance of the reactor meltdowns.

out the reactors' backup generators. The disaster spewed radioactive
fallout into the air and water - sickening the crew of the nearby USS Ronald Reagan as they provided support.
And while the sailors were undoubtedly exposed to concentrated doses
of radioactive isotopes that are nowhere near the levels which have been
found along the West Coast - and now in California wine, it is
premature - and perhaps highly irresponsible, for officials to claim
that such small doses will have no effect, as radiation exposure is
cumulative and the Fukushima disaster was an unprecedented event due
to its massive release of radioactivity into the Pacific Ocean.

the Norwegian coastal city of Bergen. “I never expected it to take so

As Tesla sales boom in Norway, customers are grousing about a

Norway—tanked last year. Its repair staff, by contrast, has grown only by a
third—highlighting the potential troubles it may face as electric cars

Back in March, we brought you the story of Keith Raniere,
who was the co-founder and leader of a secretive self-help cult called
NXIVM, who was arrested by the FBI in Mexico and charged with sex
trafficking. Raniere was arrested in Mexico in March and charged with
sex trafficking, conspiracy and forced labor and is being held without
bail.
Raniere allegedly created a "secret society" within the organization
in 2015 that recruited women from within the group to serve as "slaves"
overseen by "masters," according to prosecutors. Prosecutors allege
Nxivm operated like a pyramid scheme, charging participants thousands of
dollars for courses while encouraging them to sign up for more and
recruit others.
While NXIVM described itself as a self-help business that has helped
thousands of people "reach their potential" through various courses, the
women’s-only "inner sanctum" led by Raniere is known as 'DOS', which
stood for “dominus obsequious sororium" - Latin for “master over the
slave women”. Once they are a member - or “slave” - they are allegedly
encouraged to recruit new women into their “slave pods”, stop dating,
and be on call 24 hours a day to their “master”.
As a reminder, DOS required female members to give their recruiter -
or "master," naked pictures or other compromising material which
could be used as blackmail before being branded with Raniere's initials
below the hip using a cauterizing iron. Smallville actress Allison Mack who played Chloe Sullivan is (or was) allegedly a "master" in the cult, and required to obey orders from Raniere - including finding women to sleep with him.
Mack would require that prospective "slaves" place compromising
collateral into a Dropbox account -- one of whom was India Oxenberg, the
daughterr of Dynasty actress Catherine Oxenberg - who met with
prosecutors in New York and presented evidence against Raniere.
Fast forward to today when Bloomberg reports
that an heiress to the Seagram fortune was arrested today in the
widening probe of the "self-help organization" that prosecutors now say
operated as "a secretive cult that branded its victims and forced them to participate in sexual acts."
Clare Bronfman, the daughter of former Seagram chairman Edgar
M. Bronfman, was one of four women charged Tuesday in connection with
the investigation of Nxivm, an Albany, New York-based
multi-level marketing company founded by Keith Raniere, according to
John Marzulli, a spokesman for the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney.
Smallville actress Allison Mack, an actress who allegedly
recruited slaves for Raniere, was apprehended shortly after Raniere was
arrested in Mexico in March and charged with similar crimes. Both have
pleaded not guilty.
According to the indictment, the four arrested women - Bronfman,
Kathy Russell, Lauren Salzman and Nancy Salzman - were members of
Raniere’s "inner circle" along with Mack, and recruited and groomed
sexual partners for him. Bronfman is one of seven children of her
father, a second-generation heir who captained Seagram’s expansion
during his years leading the company.

Just one out of every 15,330 people who keep backyard chickens has caught salmonella. The risks hardly seem newsworthy.
And in fact, the general population has a much higher rate of contracting salmonella. With a million cases in the U.S. per year, you have a one in 320 chance of catching salmonella from store bought eggs and meat.
We are only halfway through the year. But even if you extrapolate
these numbers, you are still 24 times more likely to get salmonella if
you do NOT keep backyard chickens!
But the CDC isn’t warning you about buying factory-farmed poultry products. Monday’s alert is titled, “Multistate Outbreaks of Salmonella Infections Linked to Contact with Live Poultry in Backyard Flocks.”
Last year the media ran a similar anti-self-sufficiency campaign.
Fox, the New York Times, NPR and other popular outlets seemed to run a
coordinated campaign about how the trend of raising backyard poultry is
contributing to a rise in salmonella infections.
Simply washing your hands after handling chickens will likely help you avoid any trouble.
Free-range is a USDA label which basically means the birds have
access to the outdoors and consequently they aren’t raised in cages.
That’s a broad definition, and it’s abused by the large poultry
integrators with a government sanctioned production loop hole.
Free-range implies a bird on range or pasture, but pasture or
outdoors is not actually required or enforced. This is a fundamental
deceit in the free range organic chicken, turkey, or eggs that you buy
from commercial poultry brands.
In reality, even the tiniest access to an outdoor concrete slab can make a chicken “free-range.”
Then there are other factors that one alarming statistic does not
take into account. Many people report keeping chickens enhancing their
mental health. Knowing where your eggs come, knowing that the animals
are treated well, and watching them frolick in the yard can reduce
stress and increase happiness.
Chickens are easy to take care of, so they make a great starting
responsibility for kids, who then see the fruits of their labor.
Even being exposed to livestock could inoculate you against more
serious diseases. I wonder if that is actually the reason we see fewer
cases of salmonella in people who keep backyard chickens.
In the late 1700’s, smallpox was a devastating disease. But Dr.
Edward Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had previously come down with
cowpox were immune to smallpox. The symptoms of cowpox were much milder
compared to deadly smallpox. Yet the diseases were similar enough so
that having had cowpox acted as an inoculation against smallpox.
Humans have lived alongside livestock for thousands of years.
Yet the overblown fear of salmonella from backyard chickens makes
people less healthy overall and helps inhumane conditions persist at
factory farms. Society hates anything that empowers individuals.
Basically, the overall message from society and the media seems to
encourage the status quo–even when the status quo is less healthy and
riskier.
Most people don’t want anyone else to change. Misery loves company.
People would rather drag others down than build themselves up.
Two years ago I moved to Florida from Massachusetts. When people
found out I was moving, they would often immediately remark, “Get ready
for the brutal heat and humidity!”
It was their first instinct to bring up any possible negative about moving to a much more pleasant climate.
About a year later, I posted pictures of vegetables we had grown, and
chickens we keep. I also mentioned the name we call the mini-farm:
Prickly Pear Plantation.
Was the first comment from my progressive liberal acquaintance all
about how great it is that we aren’t using any pesticides? Was it about
how happy our (actually) free-range chickens look, or about how great it
is that we aren’t supporting Monsanto? Did he remark on the fact that
basically everything we build has some materials recycled from old projects and equipment on the property? Or that we are being great stewards of the environment by keeping bees?
No. He said we shouldn’t call our mini-farm a plantation because it is apparently politically incorrect.
I’ve also had fat people tell me that running is bad for my knees.
There actually are some health risks related to too much exercise. And
there are ten times more related to not enough exercise.
If one person isn’t into keeping chickens, they get some sort of
pleasure hearing about any possible pitfall. Fat people like that
runners injure themselves. Liberals care more about the name of my
mini-farm than about the positive impact it has. And the people freezing
their asses off in Massachusetts just have to make themselves feel
better by telling me how miserable I’ll be in the summer in Florida.
But individuals actually do have control over their lives. They can
divorce themselves from a centralized and unhealthy food industry. They
can make themselves free, happy, and prosperous. They don’t have to live
in a place they hate or continue a depressing lifestyle.
It is a victim mentality when people make excuses not to make a positive change in their own life. Why bother if the alternative is just as unhealthy? Why try if I will just get beat down by society?
And the media definitely doesn’t want people to change. They have a
vested interest in making sure there is an army of negatrons to counter
every positive utterance. That is how the media protects the status quo.
It is how they make sure people don’t step too far out of line.
It is how they make sure people don’t empower themselves to stop depending on the state and corporate institutions.

North Idaho man dies in hang gliding accident
WHITMAN COUNTY, Wash. - A North Idaho man died in a hang gliding accident on Steptoe Butte Saturday morning.
According
to the Whitman County Sheriff's Office, deputies and emergency medical
crews were called to the butte Saturday morning around 10:30.
Don Croft, 69, of Athol, suffered a head injury and was flown to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane where he died.
A
friend who was hang gliding with Croft told deputies that Croft crashed
twice. Both times it appeared as though gusty winds forced Croft's hang
glider to crash as he was trying to fly off the Butte. After the second
crash, he complained of dizziness which was getting worse. His friend
then called 911.
