He then moved to the sidewalk and tried to help out two people but was pepper-sprayed by an agent.[13] The Associated Press detailed that an agent shoved a man before the two embraced and fell back.[14]

Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino said the man who shot Pretti had been serving with the Border Patrol for eight years and had "extensive training".[2]
Aftermath
Following the shooting, over 100 people assembled at the site of the incident to protest.[18] News about the shooting was transmitted across rapid response networks, including Signal group chats.[19] Federal agents fired tear gas and stun grenades in clashes with protesters.[2][20] At least one person was pepper-sprayed.[21] Two protesters were arrested after attempting to cross the police tape.[2][1] Protesters chanted "I smell Nazis."[22][20] Several witnesses were transferred to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building, a federal office building. Investigation
Mary Moriarty, the county attorney of Hennepin County, called for the scene to be secured by local law enforcement.[25] Moriarty later stated that her office was working alongside the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and that she expected federal authorities to let the bureau investigate the scene.[2] Hours after the shooting, three armored vehicles from the Federal Bureau of Investigation appeared at the scene of the incident.[26] Minneapolis Police Department chief Brian O'Hara claimed that DHS officials blocked local police from accessing the scene.[27][2]
According to a Trump administration official who spoke to Axios, the man had a firearm that was recovered at the scene.[28] A DHS statement claimed the victim was carrying two magazines and no ID.[29] The Department of Homeland Security provided a photograph of the alleged firearm and stated that the weapon had two magazines; according to CNN, the pictured handgun appears to be a SIG Sauer Emperor Scorpion.[30]
