Dog collars and Sam the Collie

Dog collars and Sam the Collie

Don

I knew going into this thing, this would be necessary for all goodness and truth. Plus, I wanted to do so. Full Disclosure. Own your past, always. Always come clean, no matter what. Christ can and will forgive almost anything.

He did it with me. And my past back in the day was a sea of missteps.

Back in May of 1990, I decided to get my girlfriend at the time a nice birthday gift. When asked what she might like, tell me 5 things. Top of her list was a collie. So, using the local penny saver - a pulp mag for businesses and services in those days- I found a dog rescue out in Fillmore, CA - Trina ran it - that had a collie rescue of about 30 dogs. Next Saturday, we went and the dog that kept pulling at her shorts was the one she selected. Sam.

Turns out, Sam was a barker. At everything. Anything. Day and Night. The neighbors were pissed, to say the least. Trina told us about bark collars, we could put on Sam at night, to stop him from barking. It wasn't painful, not like the modern drop you and hurt you kind. I tested one. It was a zap that didn't hurt, but it got your attention.

We tried the collar on Sam. Didn't stop him at all. So, after about a week, we threw it away.

Plus, we both felt and I'm sure she still does, it was pretty cruel to do that to collies which are KNOWN barking doggies. Plus, Sam did not dig it at all. Off it went. He was so very happy the day it came off.

The modern dog and people collars are deadly. I mean, they HURT. All reports say. Not like that 80s stuff; which was a 9volt battery that got your attention. I wore it on my leg before putting it on Sam. It was a distraction device. And it was sound activated; dog had to bark, no pain giving remotes like the torture collars they make and use on children today. They are BIG bdsm sellers today's stuff.

So, I have experience in these things my own self. Frankly, it was wrong to put that on Sam; we loved him dearly. He died of Cancer a few years later.
